ASEM ABA: Biometric IDs for 148,000 workers do not match Ghana Cards: Bawumia

A staggering 148,000 government employees on the payroll of the Controller and Accountant Generals Department have been discovered to have identifications that do not match any biometric identification at the National Identity Authority.

This revelation was disclosed by the vice president of the republic of Ghana, his Excellency,Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia on Tuesday, August 16.

He claims that the biometric audit conducted by the Controller and Accountant General Department led to the discovery of the development.

In addition to that, the vice president also disclosed that 533 employees on the government payroll had multiple identities.

Speaking about“Injecting Fiscal Discipline in Resource Mobilization and Utilisation for Sustainable Development,” the vice president noted that numerous measures had been taken by the government in an effort to achieve fiscal consolidation, including improved revenue mobilization and the use of digitization to reduce waste in the public sector.

Dr. Bawumia highlighted that the government is making serious efforts to combat identity fraud and corruption in the public sector by digitising government services and constructing a strong identity system with the Ghana card.

The second Gentleman stated that:

“Over the last four years, our approach has been to put in measures to build a solid foundation for domestic mobilisation, cost saving and fighting corruption through digital transformation.

And considerable progress has been made.”

An exercise just completed last week by the Controller and Accountant General Department shows that 533 people on the CAD have multiple identities in the CAGD database,” Dr. Bawumia elaborated.

“In all cases of multiple identities, the employees have more than one CAGS account with different emotes numbers. Some have three employee numbers,” he emphasized.

Dr. Bawumia went ahead to say:

“There are also 148,060 employees out of 601,948 with biometrics that did not match anyone on the National Identification register (I.e. no Ghanacard).”

“We are going to check the SSNIT database to see if their biometrics can be matched. It is also possible that some of those with matching biometrics may also have multiple employee accounts.”
