2023 BET Hip Hop Awards: Black Sherif Wins Best International Flow Category

Multiple award-winning Ghanaian singer and rapper, Black Sherif emerges the winner of the 2023 BT Hip Hop Awards’ ‘Best International Flow’ category.

He becomes the second Ghanaian to win in this category, with Sarkodie being the first in 2019 when the BET introduced the Best International Flow category.

BET Hip Hop Awards 2023 officially took place at Atlanta’s Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center on Oct. 3 and then broadcast Tuesday night (October 10th).

Black Sherif Wins: In the Best International Flow category, Black Sherif from Ghana found himself nominated alongside AKA (South Africa), Central Cee (UK), Gazo (France), J Hus (UK), K.O (South Africa), Major Rd (Brazil), Ninho (France), Sampa The Great (Zambia) and Tasha and Tracie (Brazil).

This victory marks Sherif’s second nomination in the same category, having been nominated in 2022 but losing to Benjamin EPPS.

Acception his award, Sherif said; “I saw this in my sleep every night. I started making music four years ago in a small city in Ghana called Konongo Zongo and there was no way nobody was going to convince me that I wouldn’t be here, that my music wasn’t going global.

Thank you so much BET, thank you to God, thank you to my mum, thank you to my dad, and thank you to my team. I love you guys so much and to each and every one of you here, Remember you are kings and queens back home, welcome back home.”

In a video seen online by Townflex, Black Sherif was seen in the US, where he personally received the award after being announced as the winner, watch below.

It’s a significant recognition of Black Sherif’s talent and contribution to the music scene, both in Ghana and on the international stage.

In 2019, Sarkodie from Ghana was the first to win the award, Followed by UK rapper, Stormz winning in 2020, British-Nigerian rapper an singer, Little Simz took charge as she was crowned winner of the 2021 edition, while Benjamin EPPS won in 2022.

The 2023 BET Hip Hop Awards show was hosted by Fat Joe, and featured performances by Sexyy Red, GloRilla, City Girls and DaBaby, as well as LL Cool J and Rakim’s tribute to the night’s I Am Hip Hop Award honoree Marley Marl and a So So Def 30th-anniversary tribute featuring Lil Jon, Ludacris, Nelly, Chingy, Bow Wow, Da Brat and more.

The event saw Kendrick Lamar sweeping all categories he was nominated in. The American rapper, Kendrick Lamar came up as the biggest winner for the night after winning four awards on Tuesday night in these four categories – hip hop artist of the year, best live performer, lyricist of the year, and, video director of the year.

Lamar made history with all four of these wins. He is the first artist to win hip hop artist of the year three times. He won best live performer for the fourth time, tying Kanye West and Jay-Z for the most wins in the category

Although 21 Savage and Cardi B led this year’s nominations with 12 each Nicki Minaj went home winless while 21 Savage won two, Drake who was second on the list with 9 nods also managed to win home 2 awards.

Meanwhile Nigerian’s celebrated music icon, multiple Grammy award-winning singer, and songwriter, Burna boy who was on the list as the 3rd most nominated artiste for BET Hip Awards 2023 with 7 nominations also went home winless, just like Nicki Minaj.
