The 45-year-old boyfriend of a woman whose body was discovered inside a refrigerator in a New Jersey forest has been charged with desecrating human remains and hindering apprehension, authorities confirmed.
Christopher Blevins, of Gloucester City, N.J., was charged in connection to the death of 50-year-old Laura Hughes, whose remains were found on Dec. 22, 2024, in Belleplain State Forest in Cape May County.
Police say Blevins transported the refrigerator containing Hughes’ body to the remote forest in July, before fleeing to Mexico in August, following an alleged violent incident in Runnemede, N.J.
According to the New Jersey State Police, Hughes was in a relationship with Blevins, and they had a history of domestic violence.
While the cause of her death has not been officially determined, no charges have been filed in connection to her death at this time.

The discovery of Hughes’ body came after state troopers found a refrigerator wrapped in a sleeping bag, covered with carpet, and secured with ratchet straps.
A license plate reader captured Blevins’ green pickup truck transporting what appeared to be the refrigerator in late July.
Upon searching their home, authorities found similar blue ratchet straps and a calendar with a marked “X” on the date of July 24, according to the affidavit.
Blevins fled to Mexico through Brownsville, Texas, in August, telling authorities there that he panicked after a potential bar fight in which someone may have been killed. He remained in hiding for weeks before fleeing across the border.
Blevins now faces charges and remains at large, as the investigation continues. Meanwhile, a GoFundMe campaign has been created to support Hughes’ two daughters, who were left grieving after the loss of their mother.
