Brenton Wood, the iconic soul artist renowned for his timeless hit The Oogum Boogum Song, has passed away at the age of 83.

The news of his death was confirmed by his manager, Manny Gallegos, who revealed that Wood died of natural causes.

In a poignant detail shared with Variety, Gallegos recounted that Wood’s final words were, “Catch you on the rebound,” a nod to his 1967 song of the same name that showcased his lyrical wit and charm.

Born Alfred Jesse Smith in Shreveport, Louisiana, Wood’s journey to musical stardom began in Los Angeles, where he grew up and discovered his passion for rhythm and blues. While attending Compton College, he honed his skills as a pianist and vocalist, drawing inspiration from soul legends like Sam Cooke.

In 1967, Wood signed with Double Shot Records, marking the start of a remarkable career. That same year, he released The Oogum Boogum Song, a breakout hit that climbed to Number 19 on the Billboard R&B charts. The song became a cultural phenomenon, later featured in films like Almost Famous and Don’t Worry Darling.

Under pressure from his label to produce a major hit, Wood spent six weeks reworking the original version of the track, convinced he could transform it into something extraordinary. Beyond his breakout hit, Wood’s career spanned decades. In 1972, he launched his own label, Prophesy Records, and later established Mr. Wood Records, where he continued releasing music. Despite his advancing age, the soulful icon remained active, touring extensively until May of this year when health issues led to his hospitalization.
