Quick summary
  • Tang Renjian sentenced to death with two-year reprieve in Jilin province
  • Former agriculture minister accepted $37.6M in bribes from 2007–2024
  • Expelled from the Communist Party in November 2024 following investigation

China’s sweeping anti-corruption campaign has claimed another senior figure, as former Agriculture and Rural Affairs Minister Tang Renjian was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve for taking massive bribes, a Jilin court announced Sunday.

According to the state-run Xinhua News Agency, Tang accepted cash and property worth more than 268 million yuan ($37.6 million) during his tenure in multiple government positions between 2007 and 2024. The court in Changchun noted that his sentence was suspended due to his full confession.

Tang, 61, had risen through the Communist Party ranks, serving as governor of Gansu province from 2017 to 2020 before becoming agriculture minister. He was abruptly removed from his post in June 2024 after a probe by the party’s powerful anti-graft watchdog. By November, he had been expelled from the party, setting the stage for his trial.

His downfall follows a string of high-profile purges, including investigations into former Defense Minister Li Shangfu and his predecessor Wei Fenghe. These cases underscore President Xi Jinping’s years-long crackdown on corruption, which he has framed as essential to ensuring that China’s political and legal system remains, in his words, “absolutely loyal, absolutely pure and absolutely reliable.”

The pace of Tang’s investigation was unusually swift, reflecting the leadership’s heightened urgency in rooting out graft. In January, Xi reiterated that corruption represents the Communist Party’s greatest internal threat and warned it continues to rise despite years of crackdowns.

The suspended death penalty is a common sentence in China for corruption on this scale. If Tang demonstrates “good behavior” during the two-year reprieve, his punishment may be commuted to life imprisonment.

The case adds further weight to Beijing’s anti-corruption campaign, signaling to both domestic officials and the international community that top-level party members are not immune from punishment.
