A viral confrontation at a Family Dollar store in Houston has sparked widespread conversation after a man confronted an employee for allegedly making a racist remark about Black people.
Deon “Chico” Young, who is Afro-Latino and fluent in English, Spanish, and French, shared his experience on TikTok, which quickly garnered over 775,000 views.
The incident occurred while Young was waiting in line at the Family Dollar checkout.
He overheard the employee, who was speaking in Spanish to another customer, make a derogatory comment about Black people allegedly stealing shoes.
Unaware that Young could understand Spanish, the employee continued the conversation, making offensive remarks.
When it was Young’s turn to check out, he decided to confront the employee. “Let me give you a word of advice: You never know who you’re offending,” Young said, before filming the conversation.
In the now-viral video, Young can be heard addressing the employee in both English and Spanish. “You’ve got to watch what you say when you say it.
Because you don’t know who speaks Spanish,” he warned.

He then added in Spanish, “When you talk about people, especially Black people, man, watch what you’re saying.”
Young explained his decision to confront the employee in an interview with Fox 26, stating, “Because you see me as a Black man, and you speak another language, doesn’t mean I don’t know what you’re saying.”
He emphasized that his intent wasn’t to get the employee fired but to remind her to be cautious of her words because “you never know who understands you.”
After the incident, Young shared a video outside the store, expressing his frustration over the situation and writing, “I hate it when these undercover racists be talking in Spanish about us.”
Family Dollar later reached out to Young, offering an apology and informing him that the employee’s job would be terminated.
