E-cards will be issued to public officials : Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia [See Details]

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, has announced the launch of an e-Travel Card. This card will specially be for all government officials in the country.

In a Facebook post, Dr. Bawumiah noted that this new card will, among other things, curb public officials’ expenditures.

Also, it will allow them to track and oversee their budgetary allocations for travel effectively.

“Since Independence, public officials are provided cash for their imprest when they travel.” the vice president stated.

“This system has many associated problems including the risks of carrying cash, fraud in the disbursement of imprest, the increasing use of cashless payment channels in many jurisdictions, ineffective monitoring, and controls, etc.” he continued.

The second gentleman of the country also said that ” the E-Travel Card will facilitate the cashless disbursement of travel allowance and other payments for local and foreign trips of public officials.”

“All officials will be issued with the e-Travel card and their imprest and per diem for travel will automatically be put on the card for use,” he emphasized.

The e-Travel Card is expected to provide a number of advantages.

These include the elimination of the risk of carrying cash.

It will also increase transparency and accountability.

Moreover, it will improve monitoring and control of budgetary allocations for official travel in order to avoid overspending.

The age of payment for travel in the public sector will soon come to an end, bringing greater openness and responsibility to the use of taxpayer monies.
