Ex-Brazilian International Robinho Arrested to Serve Rape Sentence

Robinho, a former football player for Brazil that was banned for nine years for rape, has been taken into custody.

He was found guilty in Italy two years ago for his involvement in the 2013 nightclub gang rape of an Albanian woman in Milan.

At his Santos, home city, Robinho, 40, was taken into custody at his flat.

After failing to get him extradited, the Italian authorities had urged that he complete his sentence in Brazil.

He should serve his term in prison rather than under house arrest, a Brazilian court decided on Wednesday in addition to upholding the previous ruling.

A motion to end his imprisonment was denied earlier on Thursday by a Supreme Court judge.

Many in the local media, who were afraid Robinho would avoid justice because of his money and reputation, have commended the swift action taken by Brazil’s legal system.

Playing for AC Milan at the time of the incident was the former Brazil international, who has 100 caps for his nation. He was found guilty, and after losing an appeal in 2020, the highest court in Italy maintained his sentence in 2022.

After that, an international arrest warrant for him was issued by Italian prosecutors.

The player, who played for Manchester City for two years, claimed on Sunday to have had “consensual” intercourse with a Brazilian network.
