A British father, Simon Vickers, has been sentenced to a minimum of 15 years in prison for the murder of his 14-year-old daughter, Scarlett Vickers, in a tragic incident that occurred in July 2024.
The court heard that Vickers had claimed the stabbing happened while he and his daughter were play-fighting in the kitchen, which escalated when they began throwing items at each other.
Vickers stated that he “mistakenly” swiped a kitchen knife, which then struck Scarlett in the chest.
However, forensic evidence presented during the trial contradicted this account. A pathologist testified that the stab wound was too severe to have been caused by an accidental swipe during a playful altercation, making it “practically impossible” for the incident to have occurred as Vickers described.
The stabbing occurred on the night of July 5, 2024, after Scarlett had come downstairs to join her parents in the kitchen.
According to reports, Scarlett had playfully tossed grapes at her father and urged him not to be “a wimp” after her mother pinched him with tongs.
Vickers, who had been drinking alcohol and smoking cannabis earlier in the evening, allegedly responded to Scarlett’s teasing with a threatening remark: “How would you like it?” Moments later, Scarlett was fatally stabbed.

Emergency services were called, but despite efforts to save her, Scarlett died from her injuries at the scene.
The judge, Mr. Justice Cotter, expressed disbelief over the events, noting how an ordinary, happy family evening turned into a tragedy within seconds due to Vickers’ loss of temper.
The judge also pointed out that Vickers’ behavior had been inconsistent with the forensic evidence, and there was no plausible explanation for why he would attack his daughter.
In sentencing Vickers to life imprisonment with a minimum of 15 years, the judge emphasized the devastating loss Scarlett’s family had suffered, describing her as “a normal, healthy girl with a long life ahead of her” before it was tragically cut short by her father’s actions.
Christopher Atkinson, head of the complex casework unit for CPS North East, stated that the motive behind the stabbing remained unclear, and the case was emotionally difficult for Scarlett’s family.
