A bachelor party trip to Miami Beach spiraled into violence after a dispute between friends reportedly escalated into a stabbing, according to police.
Authorities say 32-year-old Olajuwon Dickerson, who traveled from Massachusetts, is now facing a charge of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon following the incident. The altercation left both Dickerson and another man injured.
Investigators say the group had been celebrating at bars along Ocean Drive before tensions began to rise. Witnesses told police that the conflict stemmed from attention the group received while socializing with women during the night.
“Victim and the defendant [Dickerson] were visiting Miami Beach for a bachelor party and were staying together at the same Airbnb in the area of Miami Gardens,” the affidavit explains. “Witnesses stated they met some girls in the bars on Ocean Drive. Victim became agitated with the girls only giving the defendant attention.”
According to authorities, the situation escalated after the group left the bars. The victim reportedly confronted Dickerson when the women they had met chose to leave with him and another member of the group.
Police say Dickerson approached the victim’s vehicle as the argument intensified.
“The defendant approached and told him to get out of the vehicle,” the affidavit alleges, citing statements from witnesses. “All witnesses stated that immediately after the defendant approached [the victim] they saw blood … [The victim] was bleeding from the abdomen area.”
The victim later told investigators he only realized he had been stabbed moments later and reacted in self-defense.
Police say the man explained that he “suddenly realized he had been stabbed with a knife and, in fear of being stabbed again, he began to defend himself,” during which Dickerson sustained a wound to his arm.
Witnesses at the scene attempted to assist both men before officers arrived.
“While witnesses were attempting to stop the bleeding on the defendant, [a witness] stated the defendant handed him a folding knife covered in blood,” according to the affidavit. “All parties stayed on the scene until police arrived.”
Officers recovered the knife believed to have been used in the attack. However, Dickerson denied involvement.
“The defendant stated [the men] left the bar, and he remembered nothing else,” according to police.
He also reportedly denied that any altercation took place.
Dickerson later appeared in court remotely from a hospital, local reports said. A judge has ordered him to have no contact with the alleged victim. He is currently being held without bond as the case moves forward.
