The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration has tabled a proposal before parliament to review the current charges for passport application from GH¢100 to GH¢644.

The Ministry’s proposal, which amounts to a 544% increase, is currently being reviewed by the Parliamentary Committee on Subsidiary Legislation.

The development, according to sector minister Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, will guarantee that the ministry can prevent losses from occurring when printing passport booklets for citizens.

“Ghanaians pay just about GH¢100 for a passport yet to produce one passport booklet it costs GH¢400 which means that every passport that an applicant acquires, the government has to put in GH¢300 and this is not sustainable,” Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey said on the floor of parliament on December 14, 2023.

Therefore, it is regrettable if you are planning to travel or already have plans to travel and cannot afford GH¢400 because even tickets these days are pricey. The minister continued.

She hinted that the review was prompted by financial difficulties in Ghana’s economy, which compelled the ministry to take these actions because the State could no longer afford to subsidize passport printing costs.
