Gerard Depardieu Announces Retirement Amid Ongoing Sexual Assault Trial

French film icon Gérard Depardieu has announced his retirement from acting, citing the ongoing sexual assault charges against him as the reason for stepping away from cinema.

The 76-year-old actor, known for his roles in classics like The Last Metro and Green Card, made the announcement during his criminal trial in Paris on March 25, 2025, as he was cross-examined on the second day of proceedings.

Depardieu is accused of repeated sexual assaults during the filming of The Green Shutters (Les Volets Verts) in 2021.

The accusations come from two women, including Sarah, a 34-year-old assistant producer, and Amélie, a 54-year-old set designer.

Both women allege that Depardieu molested them on set, with Amélie claiming that she was grabbed and verbally abused before security guards intervened to stop further assault.

As he took the stand, Depardieu spoke out against feminism and blamed it for what he perceives as his “demise.” He said, “I’m very comfortable with Barbara’s songs, but I’m much less so in this new society,” referencing the late French singer Barbara.

He also added, “Cinema is no longer for me. There comes a time when you have to stop, and I’m stopping.”

The actor’s comments included several controversial remarks, such as denying the allegations by claiming he was “too old and fat” to assault anyone.

Depardieu also expressed frustration with the accusations against him, stating, “People say I’m a real creep,” while adding that he would never engage in groping or inappropriate behavior, calling it “what kids do.”

He even referenced the notorious French serial killer Émile Louis, saying he was “unhappy enough” to consider such actions.

In addition to the sexual assault charges, Depardieu is facing a separate trial for the alleged rape of French actress Charlotte Arnould, which has led to up to 15 women coming forward with similar allegations.

The actor is also under investigation for tax fraud and money laundering.

Depardieu could face up to five years in prison and a fine of €75,000 if convicted of the sexual assault charges.
