The Ghana Music Rights Organization (GHAMRO) and Apprise Music & Media, a leading digital music distribution company, are in advanced talks to establish a formal partnership aimed at enhancing artist rights, improving metadata systems, and promoting copyright education within Ghana’s music industry.

The high-level meeting, held at Apprise Music’s headquarters in Accra, brought together GHAMRO’s CEO and key representatives, who were warmly received by Apprise Music’s management team led by founder and director, Michael Bamfo.

A Shared Vision for Ghana’s Music Future

Both parties underscored their shared commitment to creating a more transparent and equitable environment for Ghanaian music creators. Discussions centered on persistent challenges such as metadata loss, royalty misallocation, and the absence of unified systems to safeguard artist rights.

“This is a critical moment for the industry,” noted Michael Bamfo. “We envision a future where Ghanaian music is not only accessible worldwide but also properly monetized and protected. Our collaboration with GHAMRO is a vital step towards that goal.”

The CEO of GHAMRO echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the organization’s dedication to building reliable systems for royalty collection, copyright enforcement, and widespread industry education.

Key Areas of Collaboration

GHAMRO and Apprise Music identified several strategic areas for joint action:

  • Educational Initiatives: Hosting seminars and workshops—both virtual and in-person—on copyright, royalties, and metadata management.
  • Artist Support Framework: Establishing consultation and referral services to assist artists with rights-related issues.
  • Media & Public Engagement: Coordinating media campaigns, joint press releases, social media outreach, and official website backlinks.
  • Advocacy & Policy Reform: Organizing joint collection drives and advocacy efforts to spotlight the need for stronger copyright legislation.
  • Formal Partnership Agreement: Drafting and signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to formalize the collaboration.

Driving Metadata Accuracy and Artist Empowerment

A key outcome of the meeting was the decision to involve the Ghana Association of Phonographic Industries (GAPI) in discussions to develop a robust, unified metadata system. The aim is to ensure that Ghanaian songs remain discoverable, accurately credited, and consistently monetized over time.

Apprise Music, which manages music catalogs for both iconic legends like Amakye Dede and Afro Moses, as well as contemporary stars such as Eno Barony, Abiana, and Team Eternity Ghana, brings extensive expertise in digital music distribution and data management.

GHAMRO, as Ghana’s statutory body for collective rights management, will play a crucial role in aligning the initiative with national copyright laws and ensuring fair compensation for content creators.

Looking Ahead

Both organizations have committed to finalizing the MoU and launching public-facing campaigns in the coming months. This partnership is poised to become a model for how digital platforms and rights organizations can collaborate to strengthen the music ecosystem in Ghana and inspire similar efforts across Africa.
