Ghana beats Nigeria to qualify for 2022 World Cup in Qatar

The entire country of Ghana is currently filled with joy and happiness after the Black Stars of Ghana beats their counterpart, the Super Eagles of Nigeria to qualify for the upcoming 2022 World Cup tournament.

On Tuesday, March 29, 2022, the Black Stars of Ghana were hosted by Nigeria as they played in their second leg of the world cup qualifiers to determine which country amongst the two will represent Africa in Qatar.

Prior to Tuesday’s match, Ghana hosted Nigeria at the Kumasi Sports Stadium (Baba Yara) in Ghana which ended with a goalless draw.

Ghana has finally proved how eager they have been to make another appearance on the world stage after being missing for years now.

The match between Nigeria and Ghana at the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Nigeria ended up with a scoreline, 1-1 which saw Ghana through as they qualified.

Thomas Partey opened the game by him scoring the first goal of the match for Ghana in the 10th minute. After 12 minutes, Nigerians also equalized courtesy of a penalty scored by William Troost-Ekong.

This new qualification happen to be the fourth time Ghana will be making an appearance at the Fifa World Cup tournament since their last appearance in the year 2014.

Ghana’s World Cup History

Prior to thus year’s (2022) Ghana has qualified for three FIFA World Cup tournaments; 2006, 2010, and 2014.

Ghana back in the year 2006, was the only African country to advance to the second round of the 2006 FIFA World Cup with the youngest team in the tournament that every year.

In the 2010 World Cup, Ghana progressed beyond the group stages and reached the quarter-finals where they were eliminated by Uruguay. Ghana was defeated by Uruguay on penalties after Luis Suárez controversially handballed on the goal line deep into extra time, denying Ghana an almost certain winning goal.

Had Ghana won their quarter-final, they would have become the first African nation to progress to the semi-finals of the world cup. Of the 32 countries that participated in the 2010 FIFA World Cup, FIFA ranked Ghana 7th.
