Latest Sports News [Townflex] – A Ghanaian Member of Parliament, Isaac Adongo, has issued an apology to Harry Maguire for using the footballer’s name in a political context to criticize a political rival last year.

During a debate on the economic budget, Adongo targeted Ghana’s vice president, Mahamudu Bawumia, by drawing a comparison between him and the Manchester United star.

Adongo claimed that Bawumia, like Maguire, seemed to have a penchant for scoring political own goals.

In a video from a parliamentary session last year, Adongo likened Maguire’s on-field performances to Bawumia’s political actions, stating, “He became the biggest threat, tackling Manchester players and giving assists to opponents.”

“Mr. Speaker, when you see the opponents go to score, Maguire will score for them.”

Now, Adongo has expressed regret for using Maguire’s name in a political context and has issued an apology for any unintended consequences or offense caused by his remarks.

Those remarks were made during a challenging 2022/23 season for the seasoned defender.

However, the current season has seen a significant turnaround for Maguire, with consistent appearances for both his club and the national team.

This reversal of fortune prompted Adongo to mention Maguire once again, this time offering an apology to the footballing superstar while simultaneously taking another jab at his political rival.

In a video circulating on social media on Tuesday, Adongo, during the 2024 budget debate in parliament, praised Maguire as a “transformational footballer,” while humorously noting that the Vice President now “roams at the IMF with a cup in hand.” Addressing the parliament, Adongo stated:

He said, “If you remember last year, I was very quick to compare [vice-president] Mahamudu Bawumia to Harry Maguire,’ he said.

“Mr Speaker, I now apologise to Harry Maguire.”

“Mr Chairman, you got very angry when I used your defender as an example.”

“Today, Maguire has turned the corner; he’s a transformational footballer. Harry Maguire is now scoring goals for Manchester United.”

“Mr Speaker Harry Maguire is now a key player for Manchester United; as for our Maguire, he is now roaming at the high heavens with a cup in hand.”

“As for our Maguire, the economic Maguire, he was able to get pensioners to leave their homes and come and parade in the streets.”

In response to the video, Maguire shared on X, expressing that he has accepted Adongo’s apology.

Maguire’s statement reads, “MP Isaac Adongo’s apology accepted. See you at Old Trafford soon,”with a shaking hands and smiling emoji.
