Graham Potter and Mikel Arteta’s reaction after Chelsea 0-1 Arsenal game

Arsenal returned to the top of the Premier League with a decisive 1-0 victory against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, extending Chelsea’s winless streak in the league to four games and extending their own to four games.

The game got off to a poor start for Chelsea, and as usual, Arsenal jumped out of the gate with a lot of energy and effort.

Thiago Silva made at least one outstanding intervention during the initial pressure, which Chelsea managed to survive, and Chelsea subsequently gradually leveled the playing field.

In a game that was mostly of low quality, the visitors continued to be the superior team, and Gabriel Jesus blew a fantastic opportunity to put that on the scoreboard as well.

Chelsea’s infrequent excursions forward typically resulted in errant passing or bad judgment on the opposite end.

In the second half, everything remained the same until some poor defending on a corner allowed Arsenal to take the lead just beyond the hour mark.

Bukayo Saka’s corner was the source of the winning goal by Gabriel Magalhaes.

Arsenal was the superior team throughout and had opportunities to increase their lead, While former Gunner Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was substituted after an hour.

Although Chelsea made a late drive, they didn’t pose a threat to Aaron Ramsdale, and Arsenal managed to hold on.

Graham Potter’s reaction after their 0-1 defeat:

“We have to look at where the two teams are at, Arsenal are in a good moment, and have worked together for a long time and we’re in different phase,” Graham Potter said.

“We tried to make it more of a London derby.

We lacked quality, but the effort was there and we were beaten by the better team today.”

“It was not a great goal from our perspective, we defended those moments quite well.”

“We didn’t function as fluently as we would like.” “There are always two teams on the pitch, and you have to understand where they’re from, and look at where they are at.”

“I’ve been here eight weeks and a lot has happened and we’ve had a lot to deal with. If you look at the Arsenal story to where they were two years ago, it was slightly different.”

“Mikel was getting pelters, that’s the life, that’s the difference.”

“We had opportunities of three-vs-three and four-vs-four but we lacked that final pass. If we look how we build our attacks, we’re not quite where I’d like us to be.”

Mikel Arteta spoke to BT Sport after the game:

“We wanted to get back to the top.”

“The challenge was to come to this stadium and put in a top performance and we deserved to win the game.”

“The maturity, composure, resilience and courage to play the way we wanted to play was phenomenal.”

“That’s very unusual and we have to make the most out of it. It’s still early in the season, it will be a long, long marathon.”

“What is fantastic to see the team take another step. Yesterday we lost that spot [first place] and we prepared to come here and win. But today we did it.”

“The fans have transformed the energy of the club.”
