Bawumia offers support to Adum fire victims in Kumasi

Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has stepped forward to assist traders affected by the devastating fire at the Adum business district in Kumasi. The disaster, which struck in the early hours of Friday, March 21, 2025, caused significant losses, destroying shops and goods worth millions of Ghana cedis.

During a visit to the scene on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, Dr. Bawumia announced a donation of GH₵200,000 and 1,000 bags of cement to aid in rebuilding efforts. He called on private businesses and individuals to join the cause and support the traders in restoring their livelihoods.

“I am donating GH₵200,000 and 1,000 bags to the victims, and I urge private individuals to also support the traders in getting their livelihoods back,” he said.

The former Vice President expressed deep sympathy for the affected traders, emphasizing the importance of unity in overcoming the tragedy.

Dr. Bawumia stressed the need for patience as the Ghana National Fire Service investigates the cause of the blaze. He highlighted the importance of identifying the root cause to prevent similar incidents in the future.

“We have to wait on the investigation by the Ghana National Fire Service, and then we can determine the cause of the fire so that next time we can prevent it,” he noted.

Dr. Bawumia also called on the government to expedite the completion of the Kejetia Central Market Phase II project. He stated that the project, which was about 80% complete when the New Patriotic Party (NPP) left office, holds immense potential to benefit the traders in Kumasi.

“We believe that when it is completed, it will greatly benefit the traders here,” he stated.

Acknowledging the bravery of the Ghana National Fire Service, Dr. Bawumia commended their swift response to the incident. He also extended well-wishes to two firefighters who were hospitalized following their efforts to combat the blaze.

“I heard about two fire personnel who have been admitted to the hospital. We wish them a speedy recovery,” he remarked.
