In a culmination of a highly-publicized trial, Gareth Pursehouse has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murder of Dr. Amie Harwick, the ex-fiancee of actor and comedian Drew Carey.
The verdict came after a jury found Pursehouse guilty of first-degree murder with a special circumstance allegation following a trial in September.
Prosecutors argued that Pursehouse broke into Harwick’s home in February 2020, waited for her return, and then attacked her, ultimately throwing her off a third-story balcony.

The motive behind the crime was revealed to be Pursehouse’s inability to move on from his past relationship with Harwick, which had ended years ago.
Shockingly, Harwick had confided in friends about her fears regarding Pursehouse not long before her tragic death.
During the trial, Pursehouse’s defense admitted that he had illegally entered Harwick’s house that night but argued that he never intended to kill her.
They suggested that Harwick might have fallen off the balcony herself and emphasized the prosecution’s failure to definitively prove Pursehouse as the perpetrator.
