Authorities are investigating after two loaded guns were discovered Monday morning on the campus of a middle school in Turlock, California — a quiet city in Stanislaus County.
According to the Turlock Police Department, the guns were found just after 10:30 a.m. by a maintenance worker from the Turlock Unified School District.
The worker came across a pile of blankets and a jacket near a fence line at Dutcher Middle School. The area is located near a neighboring apartment complex and is typically used for storing electrical equipment.
As the worker began clearing the pile, one of the firearms accidentally discharged. Thankfully, no one was injured.
Officers responded quickly to the scene and discovered two loaded handguns hidden within the clothing. The weapons and all surrounding materials were safely collected and booked into evidence.

At this time, it’s still unclear how long the guns had been on school grounds or who left them there. School staff are currently reviewing security footage to help piece together what happened and when.
The police have confirmed that the investigation is ongoing and are working with school officials to ensure student safety.

There has been no indication so far that the weapons were brought by a student or intended for any violent purpose, but authorities are treating the incident seriously.
The Turlock Unified School District has not publicly commented on the event yet, but the discovery is sure to raise concerns among parents and staff alike, especially as gun safety in and around schools remains a hot topic nationwide.
Police are asking anyone with information about the guns or who may have seen suspicious activity near the school to come forward.
