A 25-year-old Texas man will spend four decades behind bars for the 2023 murder of his girlfriend after a tragic dispute over their future. Adam Byrd was sentenced to 40 years in prison on Monday by Bexar County District Judge Christine Del Prado for fatally shooting 22-year-old Jade Alvarez.

According to reports, Byrd pleaded no contest to charges of murder, two counts of aggravated robbery, and possession of a controlled substance. Although he received 15-year sentences for each robbery charge, the sentences will run concurrently with the murder sentence.

The victim’s family expressed frustration, calling the sentence inadequate given their profound loss.
“Forty years may be the punishment that was handed down, but to us, it’s a slap in the face. It could never truly reflect the magnitude of our loss,” said Alvarez’s grandmother, Rita Camacho, in an interview with KSAT. “Her son was left without a mother and wants to take flowers to Mama every week.”

San Antonio police officers responded to reports of a shooting on April 6, 2023, at approximately 6:30 a.m. They found Alvarez unresponsive on the 1000 block of Capitol Avenue, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

A witness later informed investigators that Alvarez had borrowed her phone to call Byrd the night before the shooting. Byrd then requested Alvarez be dropped off at the Capitol Avenue location between 10:30 and 11 p.m.

Authorities discovered that Byrd was already the subject of an active warrant for two counts of aggravated robbery committed on April 1, 2023. San Antonio police apprehended him on April 12, and during an interrogation, Byrd confessed to both the robbery and Alvarez’s murder.

Byrd admitted to meeting Alvarez at the Capitol Avenue location, where they argued about having a child. According to the affidavit, Byrd wanted to start a family, but Alvarez expressed she did not want to have his baby. Enraged, Byrd shot her multiple times and fled the scene.
