Russian Man Sentenced to Over Four Years for Social Media Comment About Military Symbol

A 31-year-old Russian man has been sentenced to four years and four months in a prison colony for making a controversial social media comment against a Russian military symbol, promising to urinate on it.

Alexander Panasenko, a Kemerovo man, got into trouble after posting an aggressive statement on VKontakte, Russia’s largest social networking platform, in May 2024.

Panasenko responded to a tweet reminding locals about the rigorous regulations safeguarding the St. George Ribbon, a symbol of Russian military valor saying, “I bought it, and I’ll piss on it. And I don’t care who gets offended by it.”

Authorities took Panasenko’s statement very seriously. He was detained and accused with vandalizing an emblem of national military glory. Recently, a regional court imposed the hefty punishment, noting the “gravity and significance of the crime.” Along with his prison sentence, Panasenko has been barred from using the internet for three years.

“Taking into account the position of the state prosecutor, the gravity and significance of the crime, the court sentenced Panasenko to real imprisonment for a term of four years and four months in a general regime penal colony, and also deprived him of the right to engage in activities related to the posting of materials on information and telecommunications networks, including the Internet, for three years,” the court ruling stated.

A prominent representation of Russian military pride, the St. George Ribbon is used in numerous national decorations and has stripes of orange and black. Russian officials increased the severity of the penalties for desecrating the ribbon in late 2022, imposing fines of up to 5 million rubles or three to five-year jail terms.

Because of how harshly Panasenko was punished, his case stands out. To put things in perspective, last year, someone else was sentenced to just 18 months in a jail colony for committing a far more heinous crime: wrapping the St. George Ribbon around his private parts and sharing the picture online.

Online debates have been triggered by this sentencing, with some contesting the punishment’s appropriateness. However, it appears that in Russia, some symbols have serious repercussions that no one dares ignore.
