Manuel Akanji, 26, has established himself as an integral member of Dortmund’s squad, starting most of the side’s Bundesliga games this season, but there are uncertainty over the centre-back’s future.

The Swiss defender has just a year left on his contract and has recently rejected a bumper contract offer from Dortmund which would have seen him earn around €9.5M a year (£8m a year).

The former FC Basel defender has demanded an annual salary around €12m (£10m) before he extends his contract  with the German club.

The report from Germany indicates that a summer departure is becoming more likely with several teams in England monitoring developments, with Manchester United among those clubs.

It’s claimed Rangnick is ‘very interested in signing Akanji and it is believed the Swiss international has long dreamed of a move to the Old Trafford.

A move to United would see him reunited with Jadon Sancho, his close friend and former team-mate at Dortmund.

Akanji arrived at the the Westfalenstadion from Basel for a fee of around £15m back in January 2018 and is enjoying his fourth full season with the Bundesliga giants.

The Swiss has made 148 appearances in all competitions in that time and played a key role as Dortmund won the German Cup last season.

Ajanji grew up supporting Man United and has revealed his ‘big dream’ to complete a move to Old Trafford back in 2018.

‘I have a big dream,’ he said.

‘To get as far as possible in football. Since my childhood days Manchester United have been my favourite club. I’d like to play there one day

‘But right now, that’s not an issue. I am happy at Dortmund and try to be the best possible person off the pitch.’
