The skeletal remains of Lawrence Ray Aleshire, 53, who went missing nearly two years ago, have been found in a wooded area in Cumberland, Maryland, offering closure to his family after a prolonged search.
Aleshire was last reported missing on March 9, 2023, when his son reported they had not been in contact for several weeks. Despite ongoing efforts to locate him, his whereabouts remained unknown until earlier this month.
On March 4, 2025, a person using a metal detector in the Independence Street area of Cumberland stumbled upon skeletal remains, which were later confirmed to be human.
Authorities swiftly responded to the scene, confirming the discovery was linked to Aleshire’s disappearance.
A more detailed search was conducted the following week, which led to the discovery of a nearby campsite, as well as a backpack and documents bearing Aleshire’s name. These findings provided further clues into his final days.

The remains were sent to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) for analysis, where forensic experts confirmed the identity based on Aleshire’s medical records. However, the cause of death remains undetermined at this time.
Chief Chuck Ternent of the Cumberland Police Department expressed appreciation for the dedication of his officers and the support of the local community, including Aleshire’s family and friends, who remained hopeful throughout the investigation. “Our goal was always to bring closure to the family,” Ternent said.
A GoFundMe page has been set up by Aleshire’s family to help cover funeral costs. “Our family is asking for help to cover costs to finally lay him to rest,” the page reads.
The discovery of Aleshire’s remains, though somber, has brought his family closer to the closure they have been longing for.
