In a heartbreaking twist to a triple homicide case that shocked the Birmingham community, police say a dying mother used her final moments to text the name of her suspected killer.
Arkia “Kia” Berry, 28, was shot and killed alongside her 5-year-old son, Landyn Brooks, and her boyfriend, Eric Ashley Jr., 28, in July 2024.
According to police, Berry managed to send a single, vital message before she died: “Jaco” — a nickname for 25-year-old Jacorrian McGregor, who is now charged with capital murder in their deaths.
The victims were found inside a bullet-riddled car in Birmingham’s Echo Highlands neighborhood.
Police initially responded to reports of a crash, but quickly realized it was a homicide scene. Investigators recovered 20 to 30 shell casings at the scene.
During a court hearing last week, Birmingham detective Jarvelius Tolliver testified that the text Berry sent was a crucial piece of evidence. “She texted his name right before she died,” he said.

Tolliver explained that phone data and text messages linked McGregor to the shooting. Messages from McGregor’s friends also surfaced, telling him to “lay low” after the attack.
Police believe McGregor opened fire while all three victims were inside the car: Berry was driving, Ashley was in the front seat, and young Landyn was in the back.
Just after the shooting, a stolen green Kia was spotted near the scene and later set on fire — also believed to be connected to McGregor.
Arkia, a hairstylist, was described by family as a devoted mom. Her son, Landyn, was excited to start kindergarten and loved playing football.
“They were two peas in a pod,” said cousin Aniya Berry. “She loved her baby so much.”
McGregor remains in jail without bond. A judge ruled last week that there is enough evidence to proceed with the case.
