New York Governor Hochul declares state disaster emergency over monkeypox

Due to an increase in monkeypox cases in the state, New York Governor Kathy Hochul issued a state disaster emergency late Friday night.

The Governor’s declaration came a day after the New York State Commissioner of Health, Dr. Mary Bassett, proclaimed monkeypox a “imminent threat to public health.”

Following the revelation, New York City declared a public health emergency on Saturday.

As of now, Townflex.com knows that New York has the highest rates of monkeypox transmission in the US, having registered a total of 1,383 cases merely on Friday prior to the proclamation.

Away from New York’s 1,383 cases, the second city on the list is California with 799, according to Centers of Disease Control and Prevention data last updated Friday.

The Governor stated in his statement that he is declaring a state disaster emergency in order to boost the state’s vigorous continuing efforts to combat this epidemic.

“I am declaring a State Disaster Emergency to strengthen our ongoing efforts to confront the monkeypox outbreak,” Hochul tweeted Friday.

“More than one in four monkeypox cases in this country are in New York State, and we need to utilize every tool in our arsenal as we respond,” he added.
