Parliament Halts Approval of ¢80million For National Cathedral

By Riddy10 2 Min Read

According to gathered reports, the Trades and Industry Committee of Parliament has postponed using the $80 million allotted for building the National Cathedral.

Prior payments had been made from the contingency fund; this was the first time money had been properly set aside for the project.

The Ministry of Tourism (MoT) was allocated a 2023 allocation; nevertheless, the Committee indicated that both the new allocation and the preceding expenditures must be explained for the budgeted amount to be accepted.

To that effect, Tamale Central’s Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed shared the information with the Accra-based JoyNews on December 13.

He further stated that the suspension would be in effect until the allocation’s justification was given.

“What the Committee decided was that we cannot just approve this GH¢80 million, we must know how the other GH¢339 million was spent. What did it constitute?

“The GH¢80 million you want us to approve, how did it find space in the budget line of the Ministry of Tourism when the Minister and the directors could not speak to the questions we were asking? What constitutes the GH¢80 million, they should give us a breakdown,” he emphasized.

Background

The cathedral project and Akufo-fancy Addo’s private jet flights have both been hotly debated in recent months, and the minority in Parliament is now seeking disclosures on the amount of money the state is spending on each.

While attempts to get official records of the costs associated with presidential plane trips through Parliament have frequently been unsuccessful, the National Cathedral issue has recently garnered firm reactions, especially from the Minister of Finance.

Meanwhile, Ken Ofori-Atta revealed during his appearance before a special committee of Parliament that the money used to pay for the project in lieu of his own was taken from the Contingency Fund.
