Graham Potter, the manager of Chelsea, was subjected to sarcastic cries of “you’re going fired in the morning” when his team’s perfect start in the Premier League was shattered by a stunning 4-1 defeat against a former club, Brighton.

The Seagulls’ extraordinary triumph at raucous Amex Stadium was their first under new head coach Roberto De Zerbi and their first over the west London club since 1933, with the merciless home fans joyfully taking pleasure in their ex-agony. manager’s

Graham Potter returned to Sussex with six victories and three draws hoping to inflict more harm on an Albion team that came into the day with just two out of a possible 15 points since his departure seven weeks prior.

The former boss got off jeers and a few cheers from the fans and further boos when he came out of the tunnel.

Brighton benefited from the angry spirit of their supporters and swiftly took control of the game during a fast start.

The hosts had it easy thanks to many defensive errors and an exceptionally open tactical setup, Leandro Trossard scored inside of five minutes after Silva cleared the line twice in quick succession.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek then scored an unfortunate own goal after a corner deflected off of him.

However, Brighton was by far the superior team throughout those first 20 minutes, and a two-goal advantage was nothing they hadn’t earned.

Brighton continued to take advantage of the large openings Chelsea provided for them, and they scored their third goal when Trevoh Chalobah deflected a cross over Kepa’s helpless sliding block attempt.

Due to an apparent injury, Potter substituted goalkeeper Kepa with Edouard Mendy for the second half, but he soon had cause for greater hope.Kai Havertz pulled 1 back

Loftus-Cheek’s lay-off Kai Havertz who pulled a goal back just after the restart. Havertz later missed an easy chance late on that could’ve made things interesting.

The blues instead gave up a fourth in added-on time just to confirm the absolute embarrassment as they were unable to prevent a first defeat in 10 games since the sacking of Thomas Tuchel.

Chelsea’s boss spoke to BBC Sport after the game:

“Yes of course. The scoreline and the defeat is a painful one. We didn’t really recover. Once the crowd were so engaged it was a difficult one for us.”

“The scorelline was painful. Brighton played a good game especially in the first half.”

“You can always look at goals and think you can do better. We have to take responsibility a bit in the first half.”

“We have had a lot of football but that’s no excuse. We couldn’t quite get to that level. We didn’t take our oopportunities in attack and they did.”

“We had some opportunities to attack them too but unfortunately we missed the pass or didn’t execute, then the scoreline was a painful one. When you lose you can always do better.”

Potter on his return?

“I didn’t have any expectations. I have nothing to apologise or say sorry for. I did a good job. The team is a good team.”

Potter on disappointment after the game?

“As I said to the players, if you lose, you have to look at it and if you’ve made a mistake or got things wrong, you have to analyse it and do better.”

“I’d rather look at it from that perspective. In the end, it felt a little bit too open for us and that is my responsiblity.”
