A Texas teacher who had a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old student will not face prison time after pleading guilty to charges related to the affair.
Shawnee Nicole Despain, 26, a former agricultural science teacher at Rockdale High School, was sentenced to 10 years of probation instead of prison, sparking debate over the fairness of the ruling.
In November 2024, Despain admitted to having an inappropriate relationship with one of her pupils, which began while she was teaching at the school.
The relationship came to light in September 2023 after an investigation revealed explicit messages and videos shared between Despain and the student on her Snapchat account.
As the case unfolded, it was discovered that Despain was pregnant, but DNA tests confirmed that her husband was not the father of the child. Shockingly, she had hidden the truth about the paternity from her husband until the case was exposed.
Despain resigned from her position as a teacher after the investigation began.

Despite the seriousness of the charges—including child pornography and an improper relationship with a student—District Judge John W. Youngblood decided to sentence Despain to probation.
She also forfeited her teaching license but will not be required to register as a sex offender.
Milam County District Attorney Brian Price expressed concern over the light sentence, arguing that had the roles been reversed—if a male teacher had been involved with a female student—the punishment might have been harsher.
“Teachers in positions of trust should be held to a higher standard,” Price said, emphasizing that the emotional and psychological toll on the student could be lifelong.
The case has sparked intense discussions about the consistency and fairness of sentencing in cases involving teacher-student relationships, especially when power dynamics are at play.
