Russian President Vladimir Putin has agreed to a proposal from U.S. President Donald Trump for a 30-day ceasefire on energy and infrastructure attacks between Russia and Ukraine.
The Kremlin confirmed this following an extensive phone call between the two leaders on Tuesday.
According to a statement from the White House, both nations will immediately start negotiations in the Middle East to implement a maritime ceasefire in the Black Sea. This is seen as a first step toward broader peace discussions.
“The leaders agreed that the path to peace will start with an energy and infrastructure ceasefire, followed by technical talks on a maritime truce in the Black Sea, leading to a full ceasefire and lasting peace,” the White House readout noted.
Trump has been pushing for a U.S.-supported 30-day truce, which Ukraine had already accepted. His efforts aim to create momentum for a larger peace deal that could bring an end to the war—the most devastating conflict in Europe since World War II.

The ongoing war has led to the deaths and injuries of hundreds of thousands, forced millions to flee, and caused severe destruction in several Ukrainian cities.

Putin, who launched the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, had previously stated that he was open to Washington’s proposal. However, he insisted that his forces would continue fighting until specific conditions were met. These conditions have not been fully disclosed, but they are expected to play a key role in upcoming negotiations.
Despite this tentative agreement, military activity on the ground has not shown immediate signs of de-escalation. Analysts believe that both sides are using this period to assess their next moves while engaging in diplomatic discussions.
While the 30-day ceasefire is a short-term measure, many view it as an opportunity to explore a longer-lasting peace deal. International leaders have urged both sides to use the negotiations to find common ground and prevent further destruction.

Whether this temporary truce will pave the way for a full-scale peace agreement remains uncertain. However, with high-level talks set to begin, there is renewed hope that diplomacy could eventually bring an end to the war.
