Putin, Qatar Emir to Hold Peace Talks Discuss Ukraine and Energy

Russian President Vladimir Putin is set to meet with Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani in Moscow on Thursday for high-level discussions aimed at finding a potential pathway to peace in Ukraine.

Both Russia and Qatar have confirmed the talks, which are expected to cover not only the war in Ukraine but also a broader set of international issues.

The Kremlin has described the meeting as one that will address “topical issues,” with a special focus on enhancing trade cooperation and regional stability. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov highlighted that the two leaders will exchange views on various conflict zones, particularly in Ukraine and the Middle East.

Peskov stressed Qatar’s growing influence in international diplomacy, calling the Gulf nation an important mediator in several global crises. “The region is replete with conflict potential. And Qatar plays a very big and important role in attempts to resolve many situations,” Peskov said, indicating that the meeting could be a turning point in efforts to ease regional tensions.

The Thursday summit will mark the latest in a series of diplomatic engagements between the two leaders, who last met in July in Astana during the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit. Since then, Qatar has made strides in mediating between Moscow and Kyiv, even helping facilitate the return of children separated from their families due to the war.

Qatar’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Mohammed Al-Khulaifi, confirmed to Russia’s TASS news agency that Thursday’s discussions will include a wide range of global issues, including Ukraine, Syria, the Gaza Strip, and the energy sector—particularly liquefied natural gas (LNG), which is a key economic asset for Qatar.

“The Russia-Ukraine conflict has led to a global supply chain crisis due to rising prices for energy and basic commodities,” Khulaifi said, emphasizing that sustained dialogue between Qatar and Russia is essential to stabilizing energy markets and supporting the global economy.

In addition to Ukraine, Khulaifi noted that Qatar has also served as a mediator in delicate talks involving the United States and Iran, demonstrating the emirate’s increasing role in resolving complex geopolitical challenges.

The Kremlin has praised the trust-based and discreet communication it maintains with Qatar, saying it values the “confidential dialogue on many topics, including the most sensitive ones.”
