Russia and Ukraine traded long-range strikes on Monday, even as high-stakes peace talks aimed at ending their three-year war entered what U.S. officials are calling a “very critical” week.
The Russian Defense Ministry claimed it shot down 119 Ukrainian drones overnight, mostly near the border region of Bryansk. Meanwhile, air raid sirens wailed across Ukraine early Monday. So far, there have been no confirmed reports of damage or casualties.
As hopes for peace hang in the balance, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned that the coming days could determine whether the U.S. continues its involvement in peace negotiations. “This week will be very critical,” Rubio said Sunday on NBC’s Meet the Press.
President Donald Trump, who previously expressed doubts about Russian President Vladimir Putin’s intentions, said over the weekend that a settlement might be “close.”
But Russian missile strikes on Ukrainian cities continue, raising concerns about Moscow’s sincerity.
