Just nine months later, a night out with then-girlfriend Jennifer Lopez and rapper Shyne turned chaotic when gunfire erupted at a New York nightclub. Amid the chaos, three individuals were wounded, including a woman hit in the face.
Attempting to leave the scene swiftly, Combs and Lopez were pulled over by the NYPD for a traffic violation, only to have a firearm discovered in their vehicle. While Lopez was released, Combs and Shyne faced a slew of charges.
Though Combs was acquitted, Shyne wasn’t as fortunate, receiving a ten-year prison sentence. The relationship between Lopez and Combs fizzled out in 2001 after a two-year romance.
In 2001, TV host Roger Mills took legal action against Combs, alleging assault, false imprisonment, and property damage stemming from an interview where Combs was questioned about the death of Notorious B.I.G. Eventually, the court ruled in favor of Combs.
Another legal skirmish emerged in 2007 when Gerard Rechnitzer filed a lawsuit claiming Combs assaulted him and his girlfriend outside the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. Settling the matter a year later, details of the settlement remained undisclosed.
The legal saga continued in 2015 when Combs faced charges of assault with a deadly weapon following an altercation with a coach at his son’s college. Allegedly wielding a kettlebell, Combs confronted an assistant UCLA football coach after they reportedly admonished his eldest son, Justin, who is now 30 years old.
