WASHINGTON — Senate Democrats launched a coordinated anti-corruption campaign on Monday, accusing President Donald Trump and his family of leveraging the power of the White House to accumulate billions of dollars while working-class Americans face rising living expenses.
Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (N.Y.) joined Sens. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.), Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.), and Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) to release a detailed congressional report titled “The Cost of Corruption.” The document attempts to connect a sharp rise in the Trump family’s net worth during his second term directly to the economic challenges confronting ordinary citizens.
“Trump is without question the most corrupt president in American history,” Schumer said in a formal statement. “Trump has betrayed the American people by using our highest office not for the good of country, but to pad his own bank account, at the expense of working families. Senate Democrats are launching this effort to expose the corruption, show Americans exactly what it is costing them, and build the reforms needed to stop any president from using public office for personal profit.”
Multi-Billion Dollar Windfalls Detailed
The legislative report relies on recent executive financial disclosures to show that Trump has personally generated $2 billion since taking office again in 2025. It further alleges that his family secured over $4 billion through commercial operations deeply tied to the administration’s political influence.
The report highlights several major revenue streams:
- Crypto Holdings: The family retains over $1 billion in assets within World Liberty Financial, a digital currency platform backed by United Arab Emirates investors.
- Defense Startups: The president’s sons profited from investments in defense technology startups that later secured $3.2 billion in direct federal contracts.
- Foreign Mining: A billion-dollar tungsten extraction agreement in Kazakhstan reportedly involves financial stakes held by Trump’s sons.
Schumer confirmed the creation of a dedicated Senate anti-corruption working group to monitor the administration’s business dealings. Along with the core authors, Sens. Alex Padilla (D-Calif.) and Andy Kim (D-N.J.) will join the oversight panel.
Democrats argue these personal windfalls coincide with systematic cuts to federal programs that support lower-income Americans. The working group plans to focus heavily on reductions to Medicaid and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). These safety-net cuts were passed under last year’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act to offset permanent corporate tax reductions.
“The scale of President Trump’s corruption is mind-boggling, and it is directly responsible for the higher costs swamping American families,” Sen. Whitehouse said. “Look no further than skyrocketing electricity and gas prices. Trump is sending energy bills through the roof by tanking lower-cost clean energy to keep dirty, expensive fossil fuels on the grid, and he’s giving Big Oil cover to jack up prices at the pump with his senseless war.”
Democratic lawmakers claim these policies actively harm public welfare while enriching administration insiders.
“The Trump swamp of corruption is a mile deep and MEGA-wide,” Sen. Merkley stated. “Trump and his family use his office and official connections to rake in billions for themselves at every turn. Not only is this making life more expensive for hard-working Americans, it’s a threat to government ‘by and for the people.’”
The White House has not yet issued an official response to the congressional report or the creation of the working group.
