HILTON HEAD, S.C. — South Carolina authorities say an 82-year-old woman accused of fatally shooting her husband at an assisted living facility had planned the act in advance and documented her intentions in a handwritten note.

Harriett Recker has been charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, according to Beaufort County court records. The fatal shooting of her husband, 81-year-old Dennis Recker, occurred on the morning of September 12 at the Preston Health Center at The Cypress in Hilton Head.

Deputies from the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office responded around 10:30 a.m. after receiving reports of gunfire at the senior care facility. Upon arrival, officers found Dennis Recker suffering from a gunshot wound. His wife was also at the scene, “alongside her spouse,” authorities confirmed.

According to investigators, Dennis Recker had been admitted to the facility the previous day for treatment. On the morning of the shooting, a neighbor drove Harriett Recker to visit him. Upon reaching his room, the neighbor reportedly noticed a missing chair and left briefly to get another. During that moment, a loud noise echoed through the hall.

When staff rushed in, they reportedly saw Harriett Recker holding a revolver, while her husband clutched his chest and appeared stunned. “She shot me,” he allegedly said before collapsing, according to law enforcement.

Despite efforts by medical personnel at the facility, Dennis Recker later died from his injuries.

During a court appearance on Friday, prosecutors outlined evidence suggesting the killing was premeditated. Investigators cited financial documents, witness interviews, and handwritten notes discovered in Recker’s possession and home.

“To you all, this has just been too much for me; I so wish I could do it with the wonderful family we have, so many good friends,” Harriett Recker wrote in one of the notes, as reported by WTOC. “He can’t have a life without someone, and that someone can’t be me as I am just not strong enough or smart enough to do all this.”

Authorities said one version of the note was found in her purse, another at her residence, and a similar one was sent to a neighbor. Investigators believe the letters demonstrate a clear intent to commit the act.

The Preston Health Center provides short- and long-term medical care, including services for patients with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. Officials have not disclosed what condition Dennis Recker was being treated for prior to the shooting.

The case has now been referred to a Beaufort County grand jury, which will determine whether to formally indict Harriett Recker on murder and weapons charges.
