Spider-Man: Brand New Day Breaks All-Time Opening Day Record With $168M

LOS ANGELES — “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” crushed box office records on its first day in theaters. The Marvel and Sony superhero film earned $168 million across 4,487 North American screens on Friday.

That opening day total takes the top spot in movie history. It passes the previous record of $157 million set by “Avengers: Endgame” in 2019. The massive Friday haul includes a record-setting $72 million from early preview screenings.

Sony estimates the movie will reach $325 million domestically through Sunday. However, rival film studios think ticket sales could hit $358 million. If it hits that higher number, the web-slinger will top the $357 million opening weekend record held by “Avengers: Endgame”.

A $358 million weekend would give the film the biggest North American debut of all time. “Avengers: Endgame” currently holds that title.

”Spider-Man: No Way Home” holds second place with $260 million. “Avengers: Infinity War” sits in third with $257 million, while “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” holds fourth with $247 million.

The Destin Daniel Cretton-directed movie is also driving record crowds across the entire film industry. Total weekend theater attendance is set to push 2026 domestic box office earnings past $6 billion.

The new story picks up after the events of “Spider-Man: No Way Home.” In that film, Doctor Strange cast a spell that made the world forget Peter Parker.

Now, Peter must fight villains without help from his closest friends. He no longer has his girlfriend MJ, played by Zendaya, or his best friend Ned, played by Jacob Batalon.

Tom Holland returns to lead an expanded cast. New additions include Sadie Sink, Jon Bernthal, Mark Ruffalo, Liza Colón-Zayas, and Tramell Tillman.

Reviewing the Weekend Box Office Holdovers

While Spider-Man dominated the spotlight, several holdovers continued to generate steady ticket sales.

  • The Odyssey: The ancient Greek epic secured the number two spot on Friday with $14.5 million as it entered its third weekend. It is projected to add $51 million through Sunday—a 43% drop from last week—bringing its domestic total to a strong $395 million.
  • Toy Story 5: Pixar’s animated sequel took third place on Friday with $1.8 million. It targets a $6.2 million weekend haul, which will push its four-week domestic total to $461 million.
  • Minions & Monsters: Landing in fourth place, the Universal film added $1.66 million on Friday. It expects a $5.6 million weekend performance, raising its five-week total to $168 million.
  • Moana: Rounding out the top five, the film brought in $1.6 million on Friday. A projected $5.3 million weekend will push its four-week domestic revenue to $114 million.
