This latest arms sale marks the 18th such approval under President Joe Biden’s administration and highlights the deepening defense cooperation between the two nations.

The primary package, valued at approximately $320 million, includes spare parts for Taiwan’s fleet of F-16 fighter jets and radar systems.

These items, sourced from U.S. military stockpiles, are expected to be delivered starting in 2025.

According to the DSCA, the sale is in line with U.S. national security interests and aims to enhance Taiwan’s military readiness amid rising pressure from China.

A second, smaller deal worth $65 million will provide additional support for Taiwan’s tactical communications infrastructure, further strengthening its defense systems.

Taiwan Receives $385M in US Arms Sales as China Reacts

China, which considers Taiwan a part of its territory, strongly opposes U.S. arms sales to the island.

The timing of this approval is especially sensitive, coinciding with Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te’s planned visit to Pacific island allies, as well as stops in Hawaii and Guam.

Taiwan’s defense ministry welcomed the sales, noting that the new equipment would enhance the combat readiness of its F-16 fleet and bolster its air defense capabilities.

The ministry reaffirmed Taiwan’s resolve to strengthen its defenses against China’s increasing military pressure and efforts to destabilize the island through “grey zone” tactics.

China has ramped up its military activities near Taiwan, with frequent incursions by fighter jets, warships, and even balloons.

Just last weekend, Taiwan detected 18 Chinese military aircraft and several naval vessels near the island.
