  • Retired 91-year-old ex-officer shot in the hand during a neighborhood gunfire incident
  • Dispute over a $1,200 car repair escalated into violence
  • Six people, including a toddler, were inside the home during the shooting
  • Suspect Tavares Sheeks arrested and charged with attempted murder

Memphis, TN — A Memphis man has been arrested after a violent confrontation over an unpaid car repair ended in gunfire, leaving a retired police officer injured and a neighborhood shaken.

Authorities say Tavares Sheeks, 37, opened fire on a Cloverdale Drive home in the Castalia Heights area on September 21, following an escalating argument over a $1,200 mechanic job that was allegedly paid for but never completed.

According to the Memphis Police Department, Sheeks now faces multiple felony charges, including attempted second-degree murder, reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon, and employing a firearm during a dangerous felony.

Police reports reveal the chaos began when Sheeks appeared at the home of John Allen, a 91-year-old retired Memphis police officer. Witnesses say Sheeks shouted, “I got your money,” before allegedly opening fire from the street alongside two unidentified accomplices.

Bullets tore through the front of the home, striking Allen in the hand. “I was in a bedroom and came up to the front, and by the time I got up to the front, a bullet ricocheted through the wall and hit me in the hand,” Allen told WREG-TV.

The attack left the house riddled with a dozen bullet holes. Police say six people, including a two-year-old child, were inside during the shooting. The suspects reportedly fled in a silver Nissan sedan.

Investigators later learned that the dispute started months earlier when Allen’s girlfriend allegedly paid Sheeks $1,200 to fix her Dodge Challenger, but the repair work never began. When she demanded a refund, tensions rose, culminating in the September gunfire.

Sheeks was arrested Wednesday and booked into the Shelby County Jail, where he remains held on a $157,500 bond. He is scheduled to appear in court on November 3.

Authorities say the investigation remains active as police search for the other two individuals allegedly involved in the shooting.
