Authorities in Texas have charged a 22-year-old father with capital murder after his 7-week-old son died from injuries police say were consistent with repeated abuse.
The Mesquite Police Department confirmed that Jordan Greer was arrested following the infant’s death, which investigators linked to multiple violent assaults. Jail records show Greer was booked into the Dallas County Jail on September 22 and is being held without bond.
Police first responded to a 911 call on September 18 at a residence on the 5800 block of Northwest Drive in Mesquite, east of Dallas. They were told a child was “unconscious and not breathing.” Officers and fire department responders performed lifesaving measures before the baby was transported to a nearby hospital.
Doctors soon discovered devastating injuries, including a fractured skull, swelling and bleeding in the brain, and several rib fractures in different stages of healing. According to a police affidavit cited by KDFW-TV, the wounds indicated “extreme physical abuse” and were inflicted during at least two separate incidents.
During questioning, Greer at first denied knowing how his baby had been hurt. He later admitted to violently shaking the child and slamming his head against a crib multiple times, investigators said. In his statement to police, Greer reportedly acknowledged he feared he had killed his son.
Despite emergency treatment, the infant succumbed to his injuries five days after police were first called to the home. Detectives announced that sufficient evidence had been gathered to charge Greer with capital murder.
The case remains under active investigation, authorities said.
