Theresa Kufuor, the former First Lady of the Republic of Ghana, has sadly passed away.
According to the information we have, Mrs. Kufuor died on Sunday, October 1, 2023, in the late afternoon at her home in the Peduase area on the Aburi mountain in the Eastern Region of Ghana. Her family was with her during this time.
Theresa Kufuor was a retired nurse and midwife and was the wife of former President John Agyekum Kufuor, who served as the second President of the Fourth Republic of Ghana.
She was born on December 18, 1937, and married John Kufuor in 1962. They were together for 61 years.
Mrs. Kufuor spent most of her working life in the United Kingdom, where she studied at the Radcliffe Infirmary in Oxford and Paddington General Hospital in London. She became a State Certified Midwife with a Certificate in Premature Nursing.
Before marrying John Kufuor, she was known as Theresa Mensah and was the youngest child in her family. Her older brother was the late NPP stalwart, J.H. Mensah.
Theresa Kufuor began her education at the Catholic Convent in Keta, in the Volta Region, and later pursued nursing in London, becoming a Registered Nurse after her education at the Southern Hospital Group of Nursing in Edinburgh, Scotland.
After graduating from the Radcliffe Infirmary in Oxford and Paddington General Hospital in London, she became a State Certified Midwife with a Certificate in Premature Nursing.
Theresa and John Kufuor met in London in 1961 during a Republic Day Anniversary Dance and got married the following year. They had five children together.
She served as First Lady of Ghana for eight years, from January 7, 2001, to January 6, 2009, with grace and dedication.
