U.S. President Donald Trump has triggered massive criticism on social media after posting an altered map that shows an expanded American territory encompassing the entire North American continent and parts of Europe.
The image, shared on Trump’s Truth Social platform, displays a U.S. flag covering Canada, Mexico, Central American nations, and island territories such as Cuba and Puerto Rico. The graphic also extends to Greenland and Iceland, a European nation. Captioning on the image reads “United States of America.”
The graphic includes noticeable alterations to standard U.S. symbols, displaying 67 stars instead of the official 50, and 19 red and white stripes rather than the traditional 13 representing the original founding colonies.
The post does not explicitly state that the image was generated using artificial intelligence, though several visual details align with AI generation patterns.
The post follows previous statements by Trump regarding foreign territorial expansion, including expressed interest in annexing Greenland and Canada. Last month, Trump announced the renaming of Lake Ontario to “Lake America,” a change that has not gained universal adoption.
Critics quickly criticized the post after it was reshared on X by the group Republicans Against Trump, which called the president “f****** insane.”
Social media users expressed frustration over the post, with one user writing: “Fascinating strategy. First we rename Lake Ontario to ‘Lake America’ and now we virtually annexing entire sovereign nations on Truth Social. It’s wild that the US President is spending time drawing imaginary empires instead of dealing with actual economic realities. News flash: Our allies aren’t for sale and they certainly don’t belong to us.”
Another commenter added: “If your 80-year-old grandpa drew a map swallowing Canada and announced he was renaming Lake Ontario to ‘Lake America’, you’d hide his car keys and call an assisted living facility. But since he’s the President, we’re supposed to pretend this toddler temper tantrum is ‘genius foreign policy’. What an absolute, unhinged disgrace to the office.”
Other commentators framed the graphic as a reflection of personal frustration over foreign policy goals. “The reality is the only thing he wants is Canada and Greenland. This was never about anything other than that. Trade is just the mask he is using. He is a baby who is not getting what he wants,” wrote one user. Another stated: “Without a doubt this idiot needs to be removed from office…ASAP!!” A separate user added: “A control freak wanting to control and own everything and (who) throws a fit when things don’t go their way is a terrifying ruler to have.”
The continent depicted in the graphic includes independent countries alongside overseas territories belonging to the UK, France, the Netherlands, and Denmark. Puerto Rico and the United States Virgin Islands are existing U.S. territories.
