Trump Threatens ‘Devastating’ Sanctions on Russia if Putin Rejects 30-Day Ceasefire

U.S. President Donald Trump has issued a stark warning to Russian President Vladimir Putin, threatening “devastating” consequences if Russia refuses to accept a proposed 30-day ceasefire with Ukraine.

The ceasefire deal, which was agreed upon by Ukraine, hinges on Russia’s agreement to halt its aggressive actions, and Trump’s threat underscores the high stakes of the ongoing conflict.

In a recent statement, Trump discussed his team’s efforts to bring an end to the brutal war between Russia and Ukraine, emphasizing the financial power the U.S. has to apply pressure on Russia.

“There are things that wouldn’t be pleasant in a financial sense,” Trump said. “I can do things financially that would be very bad for Russia. I don’t want to do that because I want to get peace.”

While Trump made it clear that he could impose severe financial penalties on Russia, he expressed a preference for diplomacy over economic confrontation.

His comments came after Ukraine agreed to a ceasefire proposal brokered by the U.S., with both sides expected to halt hostilities for 30 days if Russia accepts.

The U.S. has already imposed a range of sanctions on Russia and its oligarchs, following Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 and its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

However, the latest potential ceasefire marks a new phase in efforts to de-escalate the conflict.

When asked whether Putin would honor the ceasefire, Trump remained cautious, acknowledging Russia’s history of breaking agreements. “We haven’t spoken to him yet with substance,” he said.

“We’re going to know very soon. I’ve gotten some positive messages, but a positive message means nothing. Very serious situation. This is a situation that could lead to World War III.”

The ball is now in Russia’s court, with the fate of the ceasefire and peace talks resting on Putin’s response.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed that the U.S. had lifted the pause on military aid and intelligence sharing with Ukraine, signaling continued support for the embattled nation.
