Breaking News: WHO Declares End to Covid-19 Global Health Emergency

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared on Friday that the COVID-19 pandemic is no longer a worldwide public health emergency.

Covid-19 Is No Longer an Emergency for Global Health: The WHO emergency committee, which met for the fifteenth time on Thursday, recommended the declaration, which was issued on January 30, 2020, over three years ago.

In response, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the director-general of WHO, said, “It is therefore with great hope that I declare Covid-19 over as a global health emergency.”

For the most dangerous disease outbreaks, the World Health Organization declares a public health emergency of international importance. Since 2007, the group has given the designation to seven outbreaks: polio, Zika, monkeypox, Covid, H1N1 flu, and Ebola (which has been declared an emergency twice).

Global Covid deaths have decreased over the last three months, according to WHO data, from over 41,000 weekly deaths at the start of January to about 3,500 deaths on April 24.

Tedros observed that the pandemic has been declining for more than a year, with a rise in infection and vaccination resistance among the populace, a decline in death, and a release of pressure on healthcare services. Most countries are now able to resume their pre-Covid-19 lives thanks to this development.

However, Tedros warned that Covid still remains a threat, and someone died of Covid every three minutes worldwide last week. He urged countries not to let down their guard or dismantle the systems they have built to manage the pandemic.

In the U.S., the Covid public health emergency will end on Thursday, after being in place since January 2020. The country is currently seeing around 158 daily deaths, on average, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Tedros emphasized that the announcement means it is time for countries to transition from emergency mode to managing Covid-19 alongside other infectious diseases.
