The latest episode of Court TV’s Interview With a Killer, titled “Catfishing for Murder,” focuses on the harrowing case of Denali Brehmer, who was convicted for the 2019 murder of her friend, Cynthia Hoffman.
Now 23, Brehmer sits down for her first in-depth interview, revealing the complex dynamics behind the crime, which stemmed from an online relationship with Darin Schilmiller, a 21-year-old Indiana man who deceived her into believing he was wealthy and willing to pay her $9 million to kill someone.
Brehmer was sentenced to 99 years in prison for Hoffman’s murder, which she committed after Schilmiller solicited the act.

However, as host David Scott and former FBI agent Brad Garrett explore, the case raises questions about manipulation and agency.
Scott notes, “It’s not clear to me who was the predator and who was the prey in this case of catfishing,” highlighting the murky nature of Brehmer’s involvement.

During the episode, Brehmer describes Thunderbird Falls as a “place of opportunity” where the murder was carried out.
She explains that her anger towards Hoffman, stemming from a dispute over another man, played a role in her decision-making.
Brehmer admits the murder is “on me” but oscillates between viewing it as a desire for revenge and a misguided attempt to scare her friend.
Hoffman’s family has spoken out about the tragedy, noting that she had a learning disability and considered Brehmer her best friend.
The episode airs on November 3, 2024, and promises to delve into the dark implications of online relationships and the devastating consequences they can yield.
