Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has made an unexpected statement, saying he is “ready” to step down as leader if it would guarantee peace for Ukraine.
At a press conference on February 23, Zelensky suggested that his resignation could be exchanged for NATO membership, a key goal for Ukraine in its fight against Russia.
When asked if he would be willing to resign to bring peace to his country, Zelensky responded, “If [it guarantees] peace for Ukraine, if you really need me to resign, I am ready.
I can exchange it for NATO.” This statement comes amid rising tensions with former U.S. President Donald Trump, who recently accused Ukraine of initiating the war, only to later admit that Russia was the aggressor.
Trump’s comments have strained relations, with Zelensky accusing him of spreading “disinformation.”
Zelensky’s comments reflect the ongoing political complexities surrounding the war, as Ukraine continues to resist Russian aggression.
In response to Trump’s remarks, Zelensky said, “There is no space for emotions here,” emphasising that his approach is pragmatic. “Obviously, I would not say President Trump’s words about me are compliments,” he added.

Meanwhile, the situation on the ground remains dire. In a record-breaking attack on Saturday night, Russia launched 267 drones at Ukraine, killing at least one person.

This marked the largest drone assault since Iranian-made drones began targeting Ukrainian cities and villages.
Zelensky condemned the attack, calling it “aerial terror,” and reaffirmed his commitment to finding a lasting and just peace for Ukraine, calling for unity among European and American allies.
Additionally, Zelensky addressed ongoing negotiations between Ukraine and the U.S. over critical minerals and resources. The U.S. seeks access to Ukraine’s rare earth minerals as part of broader efforts to end the war.
In exchange, Ukraine has pushed for security guarantees, and Zelensky hopes these talks will not hinder continued military support for his country.
