Stuart Fails to Save the Universe

The universe is collapsing in the latest expansion of the “Big Bang Theory” franchise and this time, Stuart Bloom is at the center of the chaos.

HBO Max released the first teaser trailer for “Stuart Fails to Save the Universe” during Warner Bros. Discovery’s upfront presentation to advertisers in New York on Monday. The streaming platform also confirmed the comedy series will premiere July 23 at 9 p.m. ET. The season will run for 10 episodes, with new installments arriving weekly.

Cast members Kevin Sussman, Lauren Lapkus, Brian Posehn, and John Ross Bowie appeared onstage during the presentation to unveil the teaser and discuss the project.

The upcoming series pushes the long-running sitcom franchise into science fiction territory with a multiverse storyline tied directly to fan-favorite characters from the original series.

According to the official logline:

“Comic book store owner Stuart Bloom (Sussman) is tasked with restoring reality after he breaks a device built by Sheldon and Leonard, accidentally bringing about a multiverse Armageddon. Stuart is aided in this quest by his girlfriend Denise (Lapkus), geologist friend Bert (Posehn), and quantum physicist/all-around pain in the ass Barry Kripke (Bowie). Along the way, they meet alternate-universe versions of characters we’ve come to know and love from ‘The Big Bang Theory.’ As the title implies, things don’t go well.”

The teaser leans heavily into that apocalyptic premise, mixing cosmic destruction with the awkward humor that defined the original sitcom. Early footage hints at alternate realities, malfunctioning technology, and returning faces from across the franchise.

The project has been in development since April 2023. It comes from co-creators Chuck Lorre, Zak Penn, and Bill Prady. The series is produced by Chuck Lorre Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television.

“Stuart Fails to Save the Universe” becomes the fourth entry in the expanding “Big Bang” television universe. The original The Big Bang Theory aired for 12 seasons and became one of CBS’s highest-rated comedies. Its prequel, Young Sheldon, ended in May 2024 after a seven-season run.

CBS later extended the franchise with Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, starring Montana Jordan and Emily Osment, which debuted on Oct. 17, 2024.

The new HBO Max series signals a different direction for the franchise. Instead of focusing on family dynamics or workplace comedy, the show appears ready to combine science fiction spectacle with the offbeat side characters who built loyal fan followings over the years.

For longtime viewers, the teaser suggests the franchise is betting on nostalgia, multiverse storytelling, and familiar personalities to keep the “Big Bang” universe alive in the streaming era.
