A Florida man accused of killing his roommate and longtime friend after an argument over vaping inside their home is now facing a second-degree murder charge, according to investigators in Gulfport.

Police said 28-year-old Elisha Landry was arrested Monday morning by U.S. Marshals after a month-long homicide investigation tied to the death of 34-year-old Shaun Hennigh.

The case began in the early hours of April 17 when Landry called 911 from a home on Tangerine Avenue South. According to court records, he told dispatchers, “My best friend’s shot in the garage.”

When emergency crews arrived, responders immediately questioned the timeline Landry gave investigators.

One paramedic at the scene told officers that Hennigh had likely been dead for hours before the emergency call was made.

“I’m going to leave that investigation up to you, but all that blood on the ground, he’s in rigor already, he’s been down for a while,” the paramedic told an officer on scene. “He’s ice cold. He’s way colder than the environment, and he’s got rigor setting in his arms.”

Landry first claimed Hennigh had died by suicide. Investigators later said his story changed. He reportedly told detectives the gun discharged while the two men were “play-fighting” after an argument.

Police said Landry admitted he remained with Hennigh’s body for some time before contacting authorities.

Detectives processing the garage found several details they believed contradicted Landry’s account. Court documents describe bloody footprints, partially dried blood, and marks suggesting the body had been dragged from outside the garage into the building.

Witness interviews also helped investigators build a timeline that differed sharply from Landry’s version of events.

According to police, the conflict started after Hennigh began vaping inside one of the bedrooms. Landry’s girlfriend told detectives that Landry became angry and yelled at Hennigh over vaping indoors.

Hennigh then went downstairs to the garage. Investigators said Landry followed him shortly afterward and told his girlfriend he was going to check on him.

Landry allegedly told police fewer than 30 minutes passed between the shooting and the 911 call. Detectives later concluded the fatal shot was likely fired around 12:30 a.m. after interviewing witnesses who reported hearing a gunshot hours earlier.

The medical examiner’s findings also played a major role in the investigation.

Authorities said the gunshot entered the back of Hennigh’s head and traveled upward. The examiner determined the weapon was fired from at least six inches away, leading investigators to rule out suicide.

Police arrested Landry without incident. He is being held in the Pinellas County Jail and faces a charge of second-degree murder.
