Popular Nigerian singer and song writer, Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun better known as Wizkid has been crowned as the “Africa Artist of the Year” at the just ended Apple Music Awards 2021.
The awards celebrate outstanding musical acts across five categories namely Artist of the Year, Songwriter of the Year, Breakthrough Artist of the Year, Top Song of the Year and Top Album of the Year. According to Apple Music, winners were selected via a process reflective of Apple Music’s editorial perspective and global listening habits.
Apple on Tuesday, announced the winners of the third annual Apple Music Awards, recognizing the best artists of 2021 and their influence on global culture.
Wizkid was named as the 2021 African artist of the year.
Star boy’s hit song “Essence,” a track from his ‘Made In Lagos’ album, gained 125 million plays on Apple Music and over 2.8 million Shazams.
Wizkid accepting the award said he is proud to be representing the African continent as he also thanked Apple music for the award and said it is a blessing.
“Thank you to Apple Music for this award, it’s a blessing to get to do what I do, and I’m proud to be representing Africa,” Wizkid said.
