Australian Rules football player dies after on-field collision during game

Antonio Loiacono, a 20-year-old player for the Birdwood Football Club, has passed away after sustaining critical injuries during an Australia Rules football match in South Australia.

Loiacono was airlifted to the Royal Adelaide Hospital after a collision on the field during the season-opening game at Gumeracha Oval in the Adelaide Hills.

Despite being treated at the scene and by specialist paramedics, Loiacono died in hospital on Sunday night.

Australian Rules footballer dies: The Great Southern Football League expressed their condolences to the family and friends of Antonio Loiacono on Facebook.

“Community football is what we live for and this is a truly sad time when a player is cut down by an unfortunate on-field incident, no matter what level of the game.”

“Our collective thoughts are with his family and the Birdwood Football Club at this time of unbelievable sadness.”
