Almost immediately, social media users began commenting on the change in her appearance, with some suggesting she looked “white now” and questioning her identity as a Black woman.
Responding to the online backlash, Tina Knowles, 69, penned a passionate and extensive caption defending her daughter against the accusations. She expressed frustration at the attacks and labeled them as “stupid ignorant self-hating racist statements.”
Knowles went on to provide context for Beyoncé’s appearance, explaining that it was specifically tailored for the Renaissance documentary.
The theme of the documentary was centered around silver, reflected in the silver hair, attire, and carpet worn by Beyoncé at the premiere.
Knowles criticized those who misconstrued this thematic choice, emphasizing that it was a fashion statement rather than an attempt to lighten her skin or emulate whiteness.
