Darien Urban, 21, and Shalene Ehlers, 20, both of Rogers, Arkansas, have been charged with endangering the welfare of a minor and attempting to receive compensation for the relinquishment of a minor.

This disturbing event took place at the Hide Away Campground and RV Park near Beaver Lake, as outlined in an affidavit filed by Benton County officials.

According to the Benton County Sheriff’s Office, the parents were reported on Saturday, September 21, after the manager of the campground received an alarming call. The manager stated that Urban and Ehlers had tried to trade their baby boy for beer and later asked for $1,000.

Witnesses also reported a strong odor of ammonia and fecal matter from the baby’s diaper, which contained dog hair, raising additional concerns about the child’s living conditions.

During the investigation, detectives uncovered a document allegedly signed by the couple that attempted to transfer their parental rights to another man. It read as follows:

“I, Darien Urban, and Shalene Ehlers are signing our rights over to (name withheld) of our baby boy for $1,000 on 09/21/2024.” The letter also said that once signed, the couple could not change their minds or make contact again.

This document was purportedly drafted by one of the men involved, who claimed to be assisting the couple with “adopting out” the baby in exchange for beer and a $1,000 commitment.

Another witness stated that Ehlers had previously approached them and asked for drink, but was turned away.
